Vitamin C – daily requirement well covered?

Indisputably, vitamin C is indicated in phases of physical or mental weakness or extreme physical stress, such as marathon training, bodybuilding or other competitive sports.  Also indispensable in times of increased risk of infection or in case of already existing colds. Vitamin C is definitely the number 1 choice as an immune system cure or immune system booster!

And yet vitamin C can do much more than that. It plays a far greater role in many processes in the human body, so that a deficiency can have far-reaching consequences. Fatigue, joint and muscle pain, varicose veins, oedema (water retention in the tissues), infertility, unexplained bleeding and even bone and joint changes can all indicate a vitamin C deficiency.

Preventing vitamin C deficiency

It is also little known that the recommendation for an increased vitamin C intake has been made for the following groups:

  • Smokers
  • Elderly
  • Pregnant women
  • Breastfeeding women

Patients who regularly take aspirin/ASS (acetylsalicylic acid) should know that this increases the excretion of vitamin C. The EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) recommendations for the daily requirement of vitamins are only guidelines for the “minimum requirement to avoid deficiencies”.

However, avoiding a deficiency does not necessarily mean that these dosages are also sufficient for optimal functioning of the body or personal well-being; nor for correcting an existing deficiency. Worldwide, many biochemists, virologists and other health experts therefore advise higher daily intakes, especially for vitamin C!

Vitamin C high-dose
